Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick Gladiolus 875 Review

Revlon Ultra HD lipstick Gladiolus 875 is the second shade that I’m reviewing from the recently released Ultra HD lipsticks. In the US, it came out late last year. But it had only been recently that it became available locally.

I’m always attracted to makeup which promises to be HD or high definition. Meaning that it is HD photo- and film-ready. Like the HD foundations, Make Up For Ever HD and Koh Gen Do foundations, which both give a flawless coverage and make the skin look really good in photos and videos. Like you’re not wearing makeup at all, and were just born with beautiful skin.

Emma Stone is wearing HD Gladiolus in the promotional advertisement below. She also wore it to the SAG Awards where she looked really beautiful and her lips red-carpet worthy.

Revlon Ultra HD lipstick in 875 Gladiolus is a bright, medium blue-based red lip color. It doesn’t have any micro shimmers, but it’s replaced with a beautiful sheen that is not overly glossy but is not satin-matte either.

In some lightings, it looks more like a warm-toned, orange red. But in reality, it is a pinkish red with a cool undertone. The sweet cherry-like scent is really strong, especially on the tube. But once applied on the lips, I don’t find it too offensive. However, for those who are sensitive to fragrances, it might put them off a bit.

With their wax-free gel technology, the Revlon Ultra HD lipsticks promises to provide vivid color without being too heavy.

It’s not too obvious in the arm swatch below that Gladiolus is a blue-based red. In fact, it even looks to be a bright, warm-toned red. You’ll notice, though, how intensely pigmented it is. With one light swipe of the lipstick, it’s already pretty much opaque. Three swipes give a more even and opaque color coverage.

Compared to Hydrangea, Gladiolus Ultra HD is more forgiving on dry lips. It’s not drying on my lips but is not moisturizing either. Although it doesn’t accentuate dry and flaky patches on the lips, it would be advisable to exfoliate the lips before applying this lipstick.

For a wax-free gel lipstick, this one feels a bit waxy on my lips. I guess that’s the reason why it sets on my lips better than Hydrangea. It also doesn’t slide around and is a bit more long lasting.

Even those with pigmented lips can wear Revlon Ultra HD Gladiolus even without using a lip concealer first.

However, because of the shape of its bullet, you might want to apply it using a lip brush instead. Or, use a lip liner if you want the edges to be more precise, especially because this is a red shade. On lazy days when I don’t want to use a lip liner, I just smudge the edges using my clean finger or just do gradation lips.

The texture of Revlon Ultra HD is very smooth and creamy. Gladiolus feels very luxurious and applies easily without any tugging or dragging on the lips.

Revlon Ultra HD lipstick Gladiolus is not too cool-toned nor too bright on my lips. But it does have a beautiful shine which I can also tone down by blotting. It also clings better to my lips and it lasts around 4 to 5 hours on my lips. After eating and drinking, it leaves a bit of stain. However, it’s not enough not to warrant a fresh layer of the lipstick.

APPLICATION TIPS

I really wish Revlon would repackage the Ultra HD lipsticks. It does look good with its shiny, silver bullet and clear cap. But because the lipstick itself doesn’t retract all the way, it’s very easy for the lip color to rub and smudge the cap.

I bought my Revlon Ultra HD lipsticks for $15 from Revlon in Robinsons Manila. The regular price is $11, but they are currently being sold at an introductory price of $15. If you’re interested in getting these lipsticks, they’re also available here for around $11 at Amazon.

Which of these new lipsticks have you tried or bought? Does Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick Gladiolus also appeal to you?
